Choosing the best time to visit Belize City
The best time to visit Belize City for lower average rainfall is February to April, based on our own analysis of the National Meteorological Service PGIA rainfall series for 1991 to 2020. This is a seasonal planning recommendation drawn from historical data at the airport near Ladyville. It does not promise dry days, clear underwater views or uninterrupted cave and boat operations.
Choose your priority before choosing dates. A visit centred on the city’s landmarks asks different questions from a cave-tubing day or a sea crossing to the Cayes. A cruise passenger also has a fixed call and a tender journey to fit around the outing. If the itinerary gives you little choice of month, focus instead on flexibility, the actual shore window and an activity that fits your group.

Choose the season around the activity
For urban history, build a visit around Haulover Creek, the Swing Bridge and the cathedral’s historical setting. For Maya archaeology, consider Altun Ha or Lamanai as separate excursions beyond the city. Lamanai is beside the New River and involves a different route from an island crossing. Use the monthly weather table for the underlying climate figures rather than applying one seasonal label to every possible journey.
A boat-based plan needs attention to the sea as well as rain. Hol Chan lies south of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye; it is not a Belize City beach. If an island connection is part of your stay, treat the water taxi as its own journey, with its own departure arrangements. The water taxi guide separates those connections from road transfers and mainland excursions.

A cave-tubing day within your shore plans
Guided cave tubing with lunch, tube delivery and Belize City pickup offers a specific outing to consider alongside the season, water conditions and your time ashore.
Rainy-season planning
Our interpretation of the historical PGIA series places March as the driest month and October as the wettest. The figures are climate averages, so use them to decide how much flexibility matters to your itinerary rather than to predict the weather on your chosen date. Keep the detailed monthly comparisons on the weather page and assess the actual outing with current information.
For a cave day, give water conditions particular attention. Nohoch Che’en is at the Sibun River in eastern Cayo District. Its regular visitor information does not establish current operation of the water activity. Leave room for a changed plan and follow the current instructions for your excursion; obtain the current cave instructions even in a season with lower average rain.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic and Caribbean hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with storms possible outside that period. Use the National Meteorological Service of Belize General Weather Forecast and Marine Forecast as current information sources. The seasonal dates help frame planning but do not identify the weather or sea state for a particular cruise call.
A practical approach is to keep the most condition-dependent journey separate from a tight onward connection. This is especially relevant when a flight, a ferry and an excursion are all being considered for the same part of the trip. Choose the main experience first, then arrange transport around it rather than treating every published service as an interchangeable link.
Cave tubing and participation
The cave-tubing shore excursion includes a licensed cave guide, tubing safety equipment and tube delivery to the cave entrance. Its inclusions also cover a traditional Belizean lunch and pickup and drop-off at Belize City hotels, the cruise port at Terminal 1 and water taxi terminals. These are services of that excursion, not a guarantee that water conditions will allow the activity on every date.
NICH’s undated published guidance for Nohoch Che’en calls for a guide with at most 8 guests, a minimum height of 40 inches or 101.6 cm, swimming ability and good physical condition. A life vest and helmet with light are required in that guidance. Do not touch or climb formations, run or jump. Consider those participation points before choosing the cave-tubing activity, independently of the season.
Travel and tender buffers
For cruise guests, distinguish arrival of the ship from reaching the shore meeting point. Use the ship’s actual tender window and return deadline; a tour pickup does not replace the tender crossing. The shore excursions guide helps choose an outing within that framework. For a stay beginning by air, BZE in Ladyville is distinct from the municipal airport, and the road transfer to a water taxi terminal is separate from the ferry ticket.
Questions about choosing your dates
Which months have lower historical rainfall?
Our own analysis of the PGIA rainfall series for 1991 to 2020 identifies February to April as the least rainy months. The result supports seasonal planning and is not a forecast for individual days.
Can a cruise visitor choose a tour just by season?
Fit the activity to the actual call, tender arrangements and ship return instructions as well as current conditions. Work out your usable shore time from those specific travel instructions.
Is cave tubing suitable for every child in a dry month?
Apply the published participation guidance independently of the month: minimum height 40 inches or 101.6 cm, swimming ability and good physical condition, with a guide and the specified safety equipment.
